WHALE WATCHING TOUR
Puerto López has become Ecuador and South America's most important whale watching spot. Thousands of tourists arrive every year with the purpose of witnessing the spectacle that these beautiful mammals are on the island's surroundings, especially in the Canta Gallo area. A great submarine platform, approximately 40 minutes northeast from Puerto López, with little depth and moderated sea currents, conditions which make it an ideal place for the mating and birthing of humpback whales.
These mammals travel about 8000 KM a year, from Antarctica's freezing waters to Ecuadorian waters, to mate. The adults can grow up to 53 feet in length and weight up to 40 tons. They arrive during the first day of June to the last days of September when their mating and breeding cycle end and they return to their feeding zone in the South Pole.
ITINERARY
This tour has a duration of approximately 4 hours.
Departure from Puerto López is around 9:30 AM. The time of return will be established depending on the location; it may be 2 to 4 hours.
Transportation is arranged in legally established embarkations that have the same characteristics as those that leave Isla de Plata.
COST: $25 per person
INCLUDES: Maritime transportation, naturalist guides, and box lunch.
Tickets to Machalilla National Park are not necessary because whale watching takes place on the outside of the reservation.
