DE LA PLATA ISLAND
Isla de la Plata is considered one of Machalilla National Park's most important places. Archeological remains point to it being used as a place for sun worship by most pre-Columbian cultures. It was also a place of trade of the famous Spondylus shell, considered a delicacy of the gods and used as primitive currency by pre-Hispanic cultures.
Later on it served as a refuge for pirates and corsairs, who used the island as an operations base to attack Spanish galleons. Part of the story claims that there are tons of precious metals buried in the island's surrounding waters, hence the island's name.
Nowadays its importance lies in the fact that it's a nesting site for seabirds such as blue- footed boobies, lovebirds, red-legged birds, fragatas, tropical birds, albatross, and sea lions. Aside form it being ideal mating place it also has an extension of 1200 hectares. Machalilla National Park opened two sightseeing trails. The pathways are approximately 3 KM, are a 3 hour walk, and require the supervision of a certified naturalist guide.
Another popular activity is snorkeling, activity that's made easy by the island's coastal profile which is filled with coral reefs. Another main attraction is whale watching, which takes place from June to September. Antarctic humpback whales find this place ideal for mating and the birthing of their offspring.
